Diocese of Phoenix Policy on Sacramental Preparation:

Catechesis for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation is prior to, and a separate formational experience, from Catechesis for First Eucharist and Confirmation, and is in addition to the on-going Catechetical formation.

  1. The formation which parents are providing at home, and the on-going catechesis, provided through the Catholic School or Parish Catechetical Program, form the foundation for catechesis for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  2. Children participate in either a Catholic School or Parish Catechetical Program for at least one year prior to enrollment in sacramental preparation.
  3. Ordinarily, six to nine months should separate the first celebration of Reconciliation from preparation for First Eucharist and Confirmation.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help follows the above guidelines in measuring the readiness of each child to celebrate the Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation. Each family of a preparing child receives a booklet containing an overview of our community’s approach to the celebration. A calendar of dates and topics provides the parent with all the information they need about the preparation sessions. We believe the parent, as the primary influence in each child’s life, has already done much to teach their child about a living faith and should continue to take an active role in the preparation process.

For the child’s benefit, a variety of activities or discussion topics are suggested to be done as a family at home. Time should be reserved after each session to make sure that these activities or discussions take place. All discussion topics are primarily about everyday life, but they connect in a profound way to the sacrament being celebrated.

Parental involvement is a key component in the celebration of Sacraments. Diocesan policy requires that the parent attend formational sessions with the parish staff to help in preparing the child.

To comply with diocesan policy, OLPH schedules two Confirmation sessions, Fall and Winter. During the school year, parents and their child will work on projects at home and in community service. A spring Confirmation Retreat completes the process.

First Eucharist sessions begin after the new year. Dates and session times will be advertised on the website and in the bulletin when they have been scheduled.
